Clinical Psychologist

MA Clin Psychology (University of Witwatersrand)

My Practice

I am a highly experienced clinical psychologist. I am genuinely interested to understand who you are, what you hope to gain from therapy, and to work collaboratively to try to achieve those goals. I recognise that it can feel like a big step to contact a therapist. Hopefully you will have the experience that two minds thinking together about what is going on, can open up your own thinking about yourself and your challenges, whatever they may be.

I work with individuals, couples, families and groups. I believe that therapy should motivate and enable you to explore a wide range of challenges such as relational difficulties, problems associated with adjustment, trauma and loss, and many others. I draw from a range of different approaches to tailor therapy to fit your needs and to enable you to come away from therapy equipped with a set of therapeutic tools for coping as well as growing.

Clinical Experience

I have a high level of experience from working in different settings, including private practice, private mental wellness clinics, community health clinics, and university settings for over 13 years. I work with individuals, couples and groups. One of my areas of specialization has been working with couples, and I remain involved in ongoing professional development in this area.

I have lectured at university undergraduate and postgraduate level on a range of topics and have mentored and supervised training and practising psychologists. I have also worked with mental health counsellors in community health settings on a range of public health issues. I have undertaken additional training in couple therapy, dialectical behavioural therapy, and mentalization-based therapy.

"Therapy is like weaving beads. The therapist listens for the twists and turns, the threads that hold all the parts together, the repetition, the links. "

"Life is a train of moods like a string of beads, and as we pass through them they prove to be many coloured lenses which paint the world their own hue."

Psychotherapy

Choosing a therapist can feel daunting, especially if you are going to talk about yourself and your relationships. If in doubt, just try. Speaking to a professional about a trauma, a loss, adjustment, a difficult situation or emotional issue can change your perspective and enable you to make choices to improve your mental wellbeing. Therapy can help you to look backwards and forwards. It can help you to identify and work through pain from the past and develop ways to maintain changes in the present and to cope better in the future.

There are many different ways of working with therapy. There is no one therapy that fits all. Ideally there should be a good fit between you the client and type of therapy. You are the best judge of that. I like to be very open from the start about how I work.

Psychodynamic Therapy

This is the broad area that describes how I am trained and how I chose to work.

COUPLES THERAPY

Couples can experience many challenges in their relationship. I am here to help.

Dialectical behavioural therapy

What can we do when our feelings overwhelm us? How to learn to pause before saying or doing things that we are likely to regret.

Mentalization-based therapy

Therapy which is focused on helping you to understand yourself and others better.
